The flat ground north and west of Eugene is farm country. Santa Clara and River Road still hold old farm parcels beside houses. Growers around Junction City and Coburg raise grass seed, hay, hazelnuts, nursery stock and Christmas trees. When a parcel sits idle a few years, brush and blackberry take the fence lines first.
Most of that ground is heavy valley soil that softens from October into spring. We time machine work around the wet months so the ground holds up. Late summer and early fall are usually the firmest windows out here. Rain and mud shape the schedule here more than anything else.

Himalayan blackberry is the hardest weed to hold back in this valley. The canes root where their tips touch the ground, so a small patch widens every year. Cut plants push new canes from the root crowns, and broken roots can sprout again. Around Eugene it fills fence lines, ditch banks, back lots and any field left alone.
We take blackberry out with machines. The mulcher head grinds the cane mass down, and the excavator rake pulls root balls where you want them out. West Eugene sits low and holds water through the winter. Parts of it are protected wetland ground, some of it managed by the Bureau of Land Management. We stay on upland ground. If a job runs close to a creek, a ditch or wet soil, we plan that scope with you first.
Burning yard debris is tightly limited around Eugene. The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency is the county's own air agency and writes the outdoor burning rules. Small lots in the city and inside the urban growth boundary typically cannot burn yard debris at all. Farther out in the county, burn windows open in spring and fall, and daily advisories can close a day.
That is part of why our work leans on mulching. A mulcher head turns brush and small trees into chips right where they stand. The chips stay on the ground and hold soil through the wet season. Mulching also keeps clearing on your schedule instead of the burn calendar.
Summer brings the other limit on machine work. The Oregon Department of Forestry declares a fire season and sets regulated use rules for power equipment. Those rules can restrict hours in the woods, so we plan around the level in force. Oregon typically requires an 811 call for utility locates before ground-disturbing work, and we work that in.
Eugene's wildfire hazard sits in the hills on the south side of town. The 2026 Eugene-Springfield community wildfire protection plan rated the southwest and southeast hills moderate to high risk. It also flagged Hendricks Park, Laurel Hill Valley, the Coburg Hills and Mount Pisgah. Steep wooded slopes, heavy fuels, dense canopy and narrow access roads are the reasons given.
Spencer Butte rises to 2,058 feet on the south edge of the city, timbered in Douglas fir. Houses below that ridge sit in the same fuel type. We cut fuels back around the house and shop: brush, small trees, ladder fuels and dry grass. Defensible space clearing is the version of that job we do most on wooded lots.
